Plate motions, Andean orogeny, and volcanism above the South Atlantic convection cell

چکیده
The geometric and kinematic evolution of the Andes provides insight onto the nature of the force balance beneath the South American plate. While the Andean load is opposed on its western edge by the force induced by subduction of the Nazca plate, its more elusive eastern counterpart, which we explore herein, requires some contribution from the mantle beneath the South Atlantic. Using a mantle flow model, we show that the Andes owe their existence to basal drag beneath South America caused by a cylindrical convection cell under the South Atlantic. We find that the observed Andean uplift requires both westward push from active upwelling beneath Africa and westward drag toward the downgoing Nazca slab. These mutuallyreinforcing downwellings and upwellings amount to 38% and 23% of the total driving force, respectively. Further decomposition reveals that the South Atlantic cell is most vigorous near its center, rendering the net drag force higher where the Andes also *Manuscript Click here to view linked References in su -0 06 65 61 3, v er si on 1 6 Fe b 20 12 Author manuscript, published in "Earth and Planetary Science Letters 316-317 (2012) 126-135" DOI : 10.1016/j.epsl.2011.11.040

Rapid South Atlantic spreading changes and coeval vertical motion in surrounding continents: Evidence for temporal changes of pressuredriven upper mantle flow
The South Atlantic region displays (1) a topographic gradient across the basin, with Africa elevated relative to South America, (2) a bimodal spreading history with fast spreading rates in Late Cretaceous and Eo-Oligocene, and (3) episodic regional uplift events in the adjacent continents concentrated in Late Cretaceous and Oligocene. Here we show that these observations can be linked by dynami...
متن کاملPlate Tectonics as a Far- From- Equilibrium Self-Organized System
Contained fluids heated from below spontaneously organize into convection cells when sufficiently far from conductive equilibrium. Fluids can also be organized by surface tension and other forces at the top. Plate tectonics was once regarded as passive motion of plates on top of mantle convection cells but it now appears that continents and plate tectonics organize the flow in the mantle. The f...
متن کاملMantle convection in the Middle East: Reconciling Afar upwelling, Arabia indentation and Aegean trench rollback
The Middle East region represents a key site within the Tethyan domain where continental break-up, collision, backarc extension and escape tectonics are kinematically linked together. We perform global mantle circulation computations to test the role of slab pull and mantle upwellings as driving forces for the kinematics of the Arabia–Anatolia–Aegean (AAA) system, evaluating different boundary ...
متن کاملVolcanism and associated hazards: the Andean perspective
Andean volcanism occurs within the Andean Volcanic Arc (AVA), which is the product of subduction of the Nazca Plate and Antarctica Plates beneath the South America Plate. The AVA is Earth’s longest but discontinuous continental-margin volcanic arc, which consists of four distinct segments: Northern Volcanic Zone, Central Volcanic Zone, Southern Volcanic Zone, and Austral Volcanic Zone. These se...
متن کاملInfluence of the Andes Mountains on South American moisture transport, convection, and precipitation
Mountain ranges are known to have a firstorder control on mid-latitude climate, but previous studies have shown that the Andes have little effect on the largescale circulation over South America. We use a limiteddomain general circulation model (RegCM3) to evaluate the effect of the Andes on regional-scale atmospheric dynamics and precipitation. We present experiments in which Andean heights ar...
